Media Viability and Sustainability Initiative 2023

In 2023, Nukta Africa under financial support from UNESCO’s The International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) implemented a media viability and sustainability project in Tanzania which aimed at equipping journalists and media institutions with practical skills and tools to develop effective strategies and interventions.

As part of the project, Nukta Africa conducted a media viability study using adapted UNESCO Media Viability Indicators, generating data and insights to guide media institutions in improving their operations, strengthening gender responsiveness, and enhancing long-term sustainability strategies.

In addition, Nukta Africa developed an online learning resource hub, a user-friendly platform designed for learners with low internet connectivity and accessible across all mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. The platform hosts courses in Data Journalism, Fact-Checking, and Multimedia and Narrative Storytelling, each featuring interactive video tutorials, learning notes, and quizzes to support practical and engaging learning.

Through this initiative, more than 350 journalists and editors were trained, strengthening their professional capacity and supporting the production of high-quality, sustainable, and credible journalism across Tanzania.

Impact: The project strengthened the skills and capacity of more than 350 journalists and their media institutions in data journalism, fact-checking, and multimedia storytelling, while providing accessible digital learning tools to support continuous capacity-building across Tanzania.
